Is there anyone that is tagged in Alabama. I've seen a rzr 1000 on governor's drive in Huntsville Alabama with a tag. Was going to try to get a chance to talk to him but traffic didn't allow. I have read where they are not allowed to be registered and tagged in Alabama. So I also do Alot of riding in Tennessee, on the roads from trail to trail and see all of the Tennessee tags on the machines. What is going to happen when I get pulled over for no tag? Cannot get a tag, so I get a ticket? I had rather be legal like every one else.

No legal way to get an Alabama tag. Think years ago some DMV's were letting people use the Mini Truck classification to tag but not suppose to anymore. In TN if your out of state, you can get a tag that's good for something like a week. Some people register in Montana I believe that is reciprocal.

So you would have to have a Montana address? Then you are street legal in Alabama and Tennessee?

No sxs is street legal in Alabama unless they tricked the system or maybe grandfathered in from an early mess up. Pretty much guaranteed to get a ticket. U can run a Triangle in the back on country roads for farm use if a lenient county. Think its Montana that anyone can register a sxs in, loose regulations, don't have to live there. Can do it online and several companies that specialize in it. TN u can get a tag for a sxs if you live there and might be reciprocal with MT since TN will tag a sxs. TN also sells temp tags for visitors out of state now, $ grab. Also riding places like RRB u have to buy 2 different hunting licenses (cheaper) or a something like hard use permit to ride the State trails. There was details on RRB website for the license. If you go to a private owned place like Windrock, don't have to buy the license, but pay their riding fees, but a lot of trails interconnect and street/gravel roads between. Coalmont, TN, Trials Training Center is a cool place.

Agree. No tags available in Alabama. Write your elected officials and tell them you want SxS's street legal. It is the only way this will ever get done. Mention that North Carolina recently made it legal and they can look that up and copy what they did there. Attached is the North Carolina amendment.

Reading that maybe I'm confused. But it states the engine must be 2,400 cubic centimeters or bigger, but there are no SXS's with 2400cc or bigger engines and the minimum length is 142" so even most fall short there as well. Not sure what they wrote that for.

You are correct. Oversight on my part. Just thought I remembered North Carolina legalizing UTV’s. Just wrote my House Rep back to clarify what I meant by UTV.

You can title it in Montana and get Montana plates to ride it on the street in any state because of reciprocity. Now you may get harassed. There is a guy on you tube that tides his rzr all over the country. Look up a1 utv on you tube. He explains how to do it in a video.

I think the reciprocity only works in states that will tag a sxs. Kinda like gun laws. Alabama, no bueno, unless the cop is confused on the laws or doesn't care.

I'm not sure what the intended vehicle group was when they wrote that bill? Seems to be geared towards homemade rock buggies or something seeing as no vin is mentioned as well. Hopefully you will get some clarification on the UTV laws. My opinion is that a Can Am Spyder isn't any safer than a SXS so why can't we operate on roads the same as them.

Simply because the spyder is designed as on road motorcycle I suspect. I feel anything should be able to ride on side roads, as long as they can do the posted speed. But I always lean towards more freedom, than less. Look at the people that make our laws, they are usually the dumbest people you will ever meet. But they need power to feel content. Same with most who enforce them. But I’m in the weeds now.

Reciprocity does apply for licensed vehicles in all states. Many cops are confused by this. Here is a good explanation by the guy that did this and drives all over the us in the rzr.
