Rugged Radios is what most use around here.
I built my own using two sets of Walker ear muffs and two Fodsports M1-S Bluetooth motorcycle helmet kits. Cost about $200 total, and a fun project. Couldn't tell you if they're better or worse than typical com units, but Deranged Offroad tested the M1-S and liked them.

I also use the Fodsports Bluetooth headsets. We wear full-face helmets and I have to tell you the headsets are really good. I am impressed.
Looking for turnkey install I bought the rugged radio set up and love it. Great for communicating with passenger and between cars with radio. Priceless in WV this weekend on connector trails with so much traffic. Lead man was able to let us know when to pull over when space was available and stay safe!

In car Coms, I went with Cardo Freecom1+. I'm looking for a bluetooth adapter for a Kenwood or Motorola walkie talkie. Figure, I'd start with this and upgrade the radio if I needed more range outside the rig.

I don't know much about the rugged radio, I need to take a look at it. Where do you purchase one or find out more info on it?
When I was poking around before making my own I ran across this company as well. The stereo setup looked interesting. If you're looking at rugged check these out, too.

Rugged Radio
Cardo Freecom1+ with a BT link(ptt) to a Walkie talkie for car to car.
I have been riding street bikes for years and communication was always an issue. I did not like the cords whipping around all the time and getting caught on things. Bluetooth and wireless headsets came into the picture and changed the game. I use the Fodsports headsets as shown in the video above and am very happy with them. My wife and I can talk easily without yelling and we can both hear great. I talked to Garrett from Deranged offroad and he has taken the Fodsports Bluetooth headsets and made them work with simple (Cheap) ear protection you can get at Walmart. He said they are awesome. I use a full-face helmet so I have not done that yet. The good thing about the fFodsports is that you can also go from car to car as long as you all have the same system so that is a plus for me.
